LaVerne Albert Opkis was born August 31, 1949, to Albert and Elda (Beckmann) Opkis. He was baptized in Christ Lutheran Church in Bazile Mills. LaVerne grew up and lived his entire life east of Creighton. After high school, he began farming on the family homestead. LaVerne married Ellen Jacob on April 14, 1973, and they were blessed with three daughters, Geni, Denise, and Beth.

LaVerne loved the farm and the life it provided for his family. He spent a few years driving truck and enjoyed the sights and the people he met along the way. No matter what odd job he was doing, the farm was where his heart remained. Life was always busy however, Laverne knew that to truly enjoy life you had to take advantage of the moments you were blessed with and have faith that all things would work the way they were intended to. He loved the outdoors and his time fishing and camping. His wife, children, and grandchildren were his pride and joy.

Grateful for sharing his life are his wife of 47 years, Ellen; daughters, Geni (Charles) Shefl of Creighton, Denise Roth and fiancé Zach Uehling of Pierce, and Beth Opkis of Bloomfield; grandchildren, Caitlin, Anthony, Christopher, and Matthew Shefl, and Devan and Rhylie Roth of Pierce; siblings, Gary (Rebah) Opkis of Creighton and Janet (Dennis) Deboer of Tabor, South Dakota; sisters-in-law, Darla Jacob of Beresford, South Dakota, Melva Tranmer of Pierce, and Carol (Steve) Stalling of Wausa; brothers-in-law, Larry (Terri) Jacob of Fremont, Gene Jacob of Fremont, and Kenny (Marilyn) Jacob of Bloomfield; numerous nieces and nephews; and special fur baby, Jeffrey.
