Elaine Darling

Graveside services for Elaine Darling, age 96, of Creighton, Nebraska will be 11:00 a.m. June 24, 2022, at Greenwood Cemetery in Creighton. Reverend Karen Juzenas will officiate.

Brockhaus Funeral Home in Creighton is in charge of arrangements.

Elaine died Saturday, May 14, 2022, at Avera Creighton Care Centre.

Elaine Janice (LaFrenz) Darling was born September 20, 1925, in Center, Nebraska, to Henry and Clara (Schroeder) LaFrenz and passed from this world on May 14, 2022.

She attended school in Center, graduating with the Class of 1942. After her high school graduation, Elaine began her working life at the Knox County Courthouse, serving in the offices of County Treasurer, Assessor, and Clerk. In 1947, she was appointed Deputy County Clerk and held that position until 1955.

On December 6, 1955, she was united in marriage to Gale L. Darling of Harvard, Nebraska. The couple made their home in Harvard for 14 years.

In 1956, Elaine began her career at Werner & Son, later Werner Construction, Inc., in Clay Center, Nebraska, as office manager and bookkeeper. In 1969, Werner moved its corporate offices to Hastings, Nebraska, and in 1970 Elaine and Gale moved to Hastings as Elaine continued her employment with Werner Construction. After 30 years with the company, Elaine retired in 1985, haven risen to the position of Executive Secretary to the owner, Phillip Werner.

Elaine and Gale continued to reside in their home in Hastings until 1994, when they moved to Good Samaritan Village retirement community in Hastings. Elaine became very active in the many volunteer opportunities at “the Village” and continued her volunteer work until her health receded and her beloved husband of nearly 58 years passed away in September 2013.

In 2014, Elaine moved to Avera Creighton Care Centre in Creighton, Nebraska, to be closer to her family. She resided there until her passing.

Elaine was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Hastings and served in various leadership capacities as a parishioner and member of Women’s Fellowship. She was also a member of Order of the Eastern Star (Masonic) and twice served as Worthy Matron of the lodge in Hastings. Additionally, she was also a member of VFW Post 1151 Auxiliary and Faith United Church in Creighton.

Elaine was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Clara; husband, Gale; sister, Norma Jean Stokes and brother-in-law, Earl Willard “Bill” Stokes; and infant great-nephew, Matthew Eric Stokes.

She is survived by her nephew, Bradley Stokes (Susan) of Frederick, Maryland; two great-nieces, Allison Stokes of Frederick, Maryland and Caroline “Kiki” Stokes of Washington, D.C.; cousin, Marsha (LaFrenz) Wenge (Joe) of Creighton; as well as other cousins throughout the country.
