Makayla Mitchell, Taylor Nilson earn spots in state hoop shoot

Makayla Mitchell and Taylor Nilson advanced to state competition following last Sunday’s Knights of Columbus Regional Free Throw Contest at Wayne High School.

Mitchell made 14 of 25 free throws to earn the 12-year-old girls regional competition championship.

She is the seventh-grade daughter of John and Tiffany Mitchell.

Nilson won a three-way tie shoot out to take top honors for 12-year-old boys. He made 19 of 25 baskets. Two shoot-off rounds followed to determine the winner. Nilson won the final contest, making four of five free throws, one more than his competitor.

He is the sixth-grade son of Ryon and Kari Nilson

More than 35 schools were represented at the competition.

The Creighton athletes won their respective divisions in the district contest at Norfolk Catholic High School in February.

The Knights of Columbus Nebraska State Free Throw Contest will be held Saturday, April 6, at Grand Island Central Catholic School.
