The Cardinal boys went on an unstoppable scoring frenzy last night when the teams from O’Neill St. Mary’s came to town.
At the end of the first quarter, the Cardinals led the Bulldogs 22-8. The lead increased to 34-16 by halftime. In the second half the Bulldogs began to find the net narrowing the gap to 52-62 at the final buzzer.
Alex Homan scored 11 points while Carson Lilly and Brayden Zimmerer had 10 points apiece.
Conner Hammer found the bottom of the net for eight points, Sam Van Metre, five, and Clay Curtis and Cade Hammer with four each.
The junior varsity boys came close to victory in the last seconds of the game. Brennan Pint sunk a three-pointer, bringing the Bulldogs within one point of the Cardinals. A last-second St. Mary’s basket gave the Cardinals the three-point victory, 30-27.
The Lady Bulldogs dominated the Lady Cards, prompting a mercy rule, running-clock, early in the forth quarter. The final score was 65-20.
“The Bulldog girls basketball team and the Creighton pep band were on fire last night,” said athletic director Randy Kliment. “The band was having fun and playing well, and so were the girls.”
Creighton sunk 21 points in the first quarter, while the defense only allowed two Cardinal points.
Maycee Zimmerer had the hot hands of the night, putting up 20 points. Ashtyn Fritz scored 12 and Charlize Wilmes, 10.
Jessica Stevens scored seven points, Kendall Wolverton, six, Clarissa Becker, five, Alaina Farnik, three and Averi Diedrichsen, two.
The junior varsity girls contributed to the varsity game. There was no girls junior varsity game.
